Areca Catechu

English Name:- Betal nut palm.

Botanical Name:- Areca catechu

Family:- PALMAE. 

Parts-Used:- Roots, leaves, Seeds.

Habit:- A slender tall palm tree, 40-60 feet high, flowers in large spadix.

Taste:- Acrid.

Chemical Constituents:- Seeds contains: Aflatoxins-B and G1 several alkaloids (Aracaidine, Arecoline, Guvacine, Isoguvacine), Phosphorus, Iron and many other salts.  

Actions:- Antimicrobe, Antifertility, Cooling, Astringent, Anthelmintic Stimulant

Used In:- Diarrhoea, Urine disorder, Smallpox, Veneral sores, cholera, Syphilis, Dysentery, Fractured bone. 

• The nuts of this herb are burnt, powdered fine and used as collyrium to prevent discharges and inflammation of the eyes.
• The extract of tender young leaves is messaged on the muscles and tendons of the waste to remove aches and pains.
• A lotion from this herb is used to constrict the pupils like atropine.
• A decoction of betal nuts and khair taken with honey cures miner urinary infections and disorders.
• Sprinkling of betal nut powder cures syphilitic ulcers.
• In case of lumbago the juice of the tender leaves is mixed with bland oil and applied as lotion.
• Its nuts are scraped and applied externally to heal ulcers.

Usages

• The nuts of this herb are burnt, powdered fine and used as collyrium to prevent discharges and inflammation of the eyes.

• Its unripe nuts are rubbed with milk and drunk destroy tape worm.
• A pinch of its powder mixed with turmeric powder and sugar stops vomiting.
• The tendency of skin peeling off at the mouth is stopped by sprinkling the ashes of its nuts with cardamom. 
• It may cause roughness in the chest and urinary stones.
• Excessive use of its nuts may lead to anemia, jaundice and even cancers.
